New Enlargements

I’m finally getting through various equipment issues – the Leicaflex is back from repair, the enlarger is aligned, the broken Rodagon enlarging lens is on its way back to Germany for repair, and my friends at National Camera hooked me up with a Nikor 80mm lens to do some medium format work in the mean time. It was really satisfying printing that first 6×6 negative and having something real come out of it.

Now the problem is I’ve made a bunch of 11×14″ prints that I can’t scan to share. I setup a makeshift copystand to take pictures of them for now, but they kind of suck, so I’ll be making some smaller prints to share this weekend.

The copystand:

This was the first 6×6 neg I enlarged – It’s a car I shot at the JJ Hill car show we (Bentley \ Maserati) sponsored last year, but unfortunately my hand was not steady and the image was blurry.

The next 6×6 enlargement went much better:

Maseratis on Film.

I took these three years ago, while shooting for an ad I was working on. The Maserati Quattroporte is still one of the sexiest cars ever created, and oh yeah, rediculously fun to drive.

This first picture is taken at the Arboretum, illegally parked next to the hedge gardens. I love shooting here, but its always a challenge because there are a lot of people walking about, and you can’t stop for very long before the next car comes. I basically had enough time to jump out, run 50′, quickly adjust the exposure, take three quick shots, and run back to the car. This was taken with my Leicaflex, and a film scan with no adjustments beyond dust removal.

Junked Buicks

When I was in Junior & Senior Highschool, a friend of mine’s parents owned a body shop in Glen Lake. We used to ride our bikes there and just generally raise hell. Behind the shop there was a little dirt lot where they would store cars waiting for parts, their boat, motorhome, and just general junk. On one side there was these two old Buicks that were just sitting there, looking cool.

Doomy, Gloomy, Beautiful

I’m rather a fan of days like today.. The air is thick with moisture, the light so gloomy things are almost black and white to begin with. It was a good day to go out and shoot, but I decided that rather than fuss with film I would take the digi out. I’ve had a mental block that made me think my digital camera was for work, film is for art, and there shouldn’t be any mixing of the two.

Due to my recent setbacks I decided I should maybe re-think my emphasis on film, so today I am starting a new emphasis on shooting more digital, making some prints, and doing a fair re-evaluation of my love of film.
